The Darfield Football Club, one of the oldest established teams in the Deame Valley, has for about 30 years played on the George Hotel ground, Darfield.
The present season has been an unusually successful one, and Darfield are, in addition to being champions of the Barnsley Association League, winners of the Barnsley Challenge Cup.
In the Barnsley Association League they have only suffered one defeat this season. Last year they created a record by playing all five matches in the Sheffield Challenge Cup on their opponents’ grounds, eventually defeating Ecclesfield by 5-2 in the final at Birdwell.
In addition they secured the Walton Charity Cup by defeating Mitchell Main on the Hough Lane ground. Despite such a heavy cup programme Darfield made a bold bid for championship honours in the Barnsley Association. League, in which they finished second. In the Beckett Hospital Cup this season they were defeated by Ardsley. Since that date they have, however, defeated Ardsley on their own ground and also obtained a further point from them.
The final of the Barnsley Challenge Cup, which was played against Honeywell at Oakwell attracted what is stated to be a record crowd for a junior football match, the “gate” receipts being £108.
To give a number of young players a chance it is probable that Darfield will run two teams next season—one in the Association -League and one in a local “derby” league which a, number of junior clubs are endeavouring to form.
