Is Mexborough Junior School Head

Coun. Walter Brookes of Snape Hill Road, Darfield, was on Friday at Wakefield, appointed headmaster of Schofield Street Junior Boys’ School, Mexborough. He will take up his duties there in September.

Mr. Brookes, who is 39, is a native of Darfield. Educated at Snape Hill Council School and Wath Grammar School, he completed his teaching training at St. Paul’s College, Cheltenham.

He began his teaching career at Pontefract Road Council School, Cudworth, and in 1935 went to Cudworth Modern School, where he specialised in teaching mathematics and art.

In 1940 Mr. Brookes joined the R.A.F., rising to the rank of Sergeant and serving three years overseas in Aden and Palestine. Returning to Cudworth Modern in 1945 he moved, in 1948, to Birdwell Junior Mixed School, where he is teaching at present.

Mr. Brookes won his rugby colours at school and College. He is a committee member of the Hoyland Schools Sport Association.
