Mexborough and Swinton Times August 2 1919
Wath Athletic 69 Darfield 34
When Darfield dismissed Wath Athletic for 69 runs in the Mexborough and District League last Saturday, there was jubilation amongst the Darfield contingent.
C Turner was top scorer for Wath, the old Mexborough league player, Harry Woodruff making the second highest score of 16, and with the exception of H Clark who scored 10, these were the only players to reach double figures on the home side.
As the bowling analysis subsequently proved, it was undoubtedly a bowlers’ wicket, Briggs for Darfield, taking six wickets for 34 runs, Needham 2 for 21 and Ferriday 2 for 12.
The glorious uncertainty of cricket was, however, manifest when Darfield went in to bat The first three batsmen retired without scoring a run, and although two wickets were down for 7 runs, and Briggs stopped the “rot” for a time, H Inchley was bowling so remarkably well that after Adams had dismissed Briggs from a fine catch by Cavill, Inchley accomplished the “hat-trick.”
Seven wickets were down for 33 and with only one more run added, H Adams, who had only bowled a couple of overs, secured the remaining two wickets having three wickets to his credit for one run. H Inchley was in his old form with the ball and captured six wickets for 11 runs, T Cavill taking one for 17.
