Five Years In India
Sergt. Jack Whitehead, son of Mrs Wm. Taylor, of Balkley Lane, Darfield, and of the late Mr. J. Whitehead, has spent the last five years in India. His father was killed in the last war and he joined the Forces about eight years ago.
During an illness he was confined to hospital with scarlet fever, met a nurse and later married her. She came from Manchester, and went out to her husband in India some years ago after the birth of their first child. She is living in barracks and they now have three children.
Jack acquired two of his stripes before the war and has gained his third during the last few months. He has got used to the life and he and his family are very happy, but are looking forward to coming to England again soon. They were ready for leaving when war broke out, for Jack had just finished seven years’ service.
For the last five years his mother has sent him the “South Yorkshire . Times” every week and he looks forward to it eagerly.
