Youth Queen
Miss Edna Wilkes was selected as Darfield Youth Queen at a competition held on Friday at the Council schools, Snape Hill, when a dance was held. The choice was made by Dr. and Mrs. Taylor, of Wombwell.
There were nine competitors. Edna, who is 18, is the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wilks, West Street, Darfield. She is the cashier in a café at Barnsley. Prominently associated with Darfield Youth Club she has been on the committee since it was formed 2 ½ years ago, and for the last 18 months has been treasurer for the club. She’s an old Wathonian, having won a county minor scholarship from Great Houghton Council School. Edna is dark and vivacious, and was wearing a becoming blue satin Beaute dress at the dance.
She will be crowned Queen at a field day to be held in Darfield Cricket Field tomorrow (Saturday), and it is expected that the school Queens from Snape Hill Council Infant and from Shrogg’s Head Infant School will be attending.
During Wings for Victory Week Edna was chief attendant to the “Wing’s Queen” Margaret Sayles, having gained second place when the Queen was selected.
