The Hull Coal Trade

The return of the Hull Incorporated Chamber of Commerce and Shipping of the quantity of coal dealt with at the port during April, shows that the present year continues to compare very satisfactorily with last year.

So far, the difference between the two years in the amount of coal dealt with at Humberside is only a paltry 382 tons in favour of last year, the respective totals for the first four months being 1,038,432 tons and 1,039,360 tons.

During April there were despatched to Hull from all sources 303,200 tons, as against 309,344 tons in the corresponding month of a year ago, a decline of 6,144 tons, which cannot be regarded as a serious falling off, particularly when it is considered that the question of price has thrown the settlement of the more important shipping contracts considerably later than usual.

Exports last month reached a total of 91,195 tons, against 85,798 tons in the corresponding month of last year, an increase of 5,397 tons. Of this amount, 30,890 tons have gone to Sweden, who last year took 27,021 tons during April; Germany, with 12,843 tons, against 8,113 tons, coming second; and Holland, 8,620 tons, against 4,458 tons, third.

The coastwise exports last month amounted to 19,989 tons, of which London alone took 18,345 tons.

Denaby and Cadeby, with the enormous total of 52,856 tons, head the list of individual contributions last month; Carlton Main and Grimethorpe, who come second, having 16,606 tons to their credit; and Kilnhurst and Thrybergh, third, 14,472 tons.
