A Sporting Veteran.

One of the veterans of sport well-known in the Dearne Valley, is Mr. G. H. Whitehouse, of Darfield, perhaps better known as “Cocky” Whitehouse. Mr. Whitehouse was at one time a track racing cyclist famous throughout South Yorkshire, and one of the prizes won by him was a full-size sideboard. On another occasion he won a gold watch, which was presented to him by Lord Derby.

Mr. Whitehouse is groundsman at Darfield Welfare Sports centre and last year he officiated as trainer for the Darfield Football Club. Mr. Whitehouse is of the opinion that the reason for the decline of track cycle racing nowadays is because of the poor prizes now offered.
