Tailend Batsmen Forced Darfield Win

Darfield  122 for 6  Swinton  119

That not all the talent is at the top of the team sheet was shown at Darfield where number 7 and 8 pulled them out of an apparently hopeless situation against Swinton.

Attacking Swinton’s 119, Darfield had six down for 46 when Dennis Batty and Les Stocks got together to defy the bowlers and carry the scale to 122 without further loss, each carrying out his bat for 35.

Swinton had two early dismissal. Frank Senior falling to Roy Schofield’s first ball without scoring, and A. Gadsby being stumped by Les Stocks for three. Harold Vickers and George Palmer made a stand for 13 each. K. Colton batted well for 2 and tenth man G. Vernon carried his bat fox 15.

It was mainly the bowling of Jack Ennis (4 for 24) which kept Swinton on the march. No fewer than five of the Swinton batsmen were caught out.

It looked as though Swinton had taken the “cream” when Darfield had lost 4 for 39 and 6 for 46. At that point Gerald Taylor (25) began to take the steam out of the bowing, and later came the match-winning stand by Dennis Batty and wicket keeper Les Stocks.

Gerald Taylor has put up some good scores this season including 41 not out against Halifax. Dennis Batty had his best score of the season.

Of particularly high merit was the contribution of Les Stocks, known to football fans as Grimethorpe’s goalkeeper.

Darfield’s patient’s reliance on younger players is paying on handsomely in their centenary season, their record of won 5, lost and drawn one being their best or many years.

For Swinton, K. Colton, G. Palmer and G. Vernon had two wickets each. For Darfield’s Batty had 2 for 22. The visit of Wombwell Main should make it a “gala date for Darfield tomorrow (Saturday).
