Why She Left
Darfield Woman’s Story
Sarah Ann Whitehouse, married, of Darfield, was charged at Rotherham on Monday with having stolen two suits, an overcoat, shoes, and a suit case, valued in all at £8, the property of John Wm. Taylor, trammer, 17, Nolbeck Terrace, Brampton Bierlow.
Taylor stated that on Oct. 28th, 1931, defendant came to live at his house as his housekeeper, the condition being that he should find her a decent home and clothing. He paid her no wages, and they were living together as man and wife. At 12-45 p.m. on Aug. 30th, she told him she was leaving to go into service. He went out, and when he returned later he found the house in a state of disorder. On the fireback he found pieces of a suit, boots and shoes, which he identified as parts of his clothing.
Defendant said Taylor had knocked her about and pulled her hair out by the roots. When she decided to leave him she took the suit-case and the clothes because she had no money.
The case was dismissed.
Inspector Holey said the goods would be handed back to a pawnbroker with whom they bad been pledged. Taylor would have to come to with the pawnbroker.
