Headmaster Will Retire In July

Mr. George Stewardson, of Upperwood Hall, Darfield, is to retire from the headship of Darfield County Secondary School in July

A native of Grimethorpe, he has also lived at Goldthorpe, Thurnscoe and oath. An old student of Mexborough grammar school he has also been associated with Mexborough Operatic Society, Goldthorpe Operatic Society and Mexborough Green Room Club.

Sport

Throughout his career Mr. Stewardson has been keenly interested in school sport and many youngsters who have been through his hands have gone into professional football. Among these are the brothers Barry and Tony Wagstaffe (now with Sheffield United), Kevin McHale (Huddersfield) and F.A. Cup winner’s medallist Gordon West (Everton).

In, recent years Mr, Stewardson has established G.C.E. and C.S.E. courses at Darfield Secondary School, which will no doubt continue, for the school’s future is as a Comprehensive School for students between 11 and 16, advanced level students then transferring to Wombwell High School.

In addition to his professional duties, Mr Stewardson has crowded many other activities into his life. From 1942 to 1945 he was Commanding Officer of Grimethorpe Flight, of the Air Training Corps attached to Hemsworth Grammar School Squadron, and throughout the war years he was local Billeting Officer and a Special Constable.

Mr and Mrs. Stewardson are keen caravanners and have spent many holidays touring this country and abroad. Mr. Stewardson has lectured to adults on Continental Camping and Caravanning.

Mr. Stewardson has now fully recovered from a recent illness and he and his wife intend staying for the present in the district, where they have many friends. The couple have one daughter, Denise, whose husband, Mr. Raymond John Casken M.A., is a lecturer at Barnsley College of Technology, and one grandson, Simon.
