Among the prize-winning animals exhibited at Conisbrough Show on Saturday was a pig weighing 68 stones.

The Registrar General’s record of births, deaths and marriages issued on Monday shows a total of £184,145 live births, representing a rate of 17.9 per 1,000 of the population, highest first quarter rate since 1926.  There were 11,874 more births than in the first three months of 1943 when the rate was 16.9. Boy babies numbered 94,964 giving a proportion of £1,065 boys to every 1,000 girls. Births exceeded deaths by 37,941.

Mr. W. Banks of Darfield, was presented with a diploma at Bethel Methodist Church, Hoyland on Tuesday, in recognition of 50 years’ service as a Methodist local preacher.

The Vicar of Mexborough, the Rev. E. H. F. Rawlins, gave an address at a children’s song service held in connection with Rotherham’s holidays at home in Clifton Park on Sunday.

Following the conclusion of the Salute the Soldier campaign local savings committees are being asked to run special campaigns on their own, directed to the consolidations of the savings groups and the stepping up of savings generally.

The Princess Royal has received a letter from her son Lt. Viscount Lascelles, of the Grenadier Guards, from a prisoner of war camp in Germany, and has reason to believe that his health is entirely satisfactory and that his wounds are healing rapidly.
