Footballer in India

Joseph Smallman (30), son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Smallman of Havelock Street, Darfield, is fighting in India with the Royal Artillery.

He joined up three years ago, and went to Italy last February. His parents have not heard from him for three months and then only in a reply to a letter telling him his brother Stephen had died.

Since then, another brother, Philip, has died and the news has just been sent out to him.

Joseph is grateful to Darfield Comforts Fund for several gifts received.  He was a good footballer and played with Ballymena, in Ireland, before the war.  Just before the war he was to have had a trial with Hull City as a right back.
