Spotlight On DarfieId
Darfield is to have a distinguished visitor In the New Year: none other true Mr. R. A. Butler, President of the Board of Education. The presence of such as important personality in modest Darfield is explained by the new Foulstone Modern School, which has now been in commission for over a year, but has not yet been formally opened. Mr. Butler will perform this delayed ceremony, which, on amount of his attendance and for other special reasons, will be a notable occasion in the history of education not only in Darfield but throughout South Yorkshire.
This magnificent new school, centrally situated to serve Darfield and the surrounding district, is one of the last of the new schools which were being built when war broke out. Construction had reached a stage which warranted completion and so the work went on despite the inevitable difficulty of securing labour and materials. Thus the circumstance of war have provided Darfield with a building which is the last word in modern school architecture and which offer facilities such as can be matched by few school, of its type throughout the length and breadth of the land.
To this good fortune is now to be added the honour of a personal visit by the President of the Board of Education. It is an honour not only to Darfield but to Alderman T. H. Foulstone, whose name the School bears and to Mr. A. R. Martin, the headmaster. Both Alderman Foulstone and Mr. Martin have good record, of service to the community to their credit, not only in their chosen vocation, but also in the wider field of public service.
As a member of Darfield Urban Council and the West Riding County Council Alderman Foulstone has conscientiously watched over the interests of the Darfield district for many years, while Mr. Martin’s record was deservedly rounded off by his recent election to the important position of Chairman of the Mexborough Montagu Hospital.
