Spreading In Local Collieries
Colliery owners and miners in this district favour the sharing out of work. Schemes inaugurated within the last month or two vary from miners standing off one week in three to one in ten, and at individual collieries there are variations to suit the districts.
Wath Main Colliery have re-absorbed over 100 men displaced through the closing of the Billingley district. There has been a good deal of negotiations at Cadeby Colliery, but as yet no scheme satisfactory to both management and men has been discussed, though at Denaby 60 men were recently re-engaged on a rota basis.
Hickleton Main has absorbed about 150 men, all who were discharged last year. A number of young miners have been re-engaged at Barnburgh , but no sharing scheme is in operation yet, nor is there one at Manvers Main, though negotiations are taking place.
Several of the collieries in the district have closed working places, but the men displaced have been found employment in other places.
At Kilnhurst Colliery, which has just restarted after a complete mechanical overhaul, about 200 men have so far been re-engaged.
