Liberal Enters ‘field’

Dearne Valley Liberal Association have decided to contest the forthcoming General Election, giving a three-cornered fight with Labour and Conservatives.

This decision was taken at a meeting at Wombwell on Tuesday, when it was also decided to nominate Coun. Peter Hargreaves (34) of Lundhill Road, Wombwell, as candidate.

The formal adoption meeting is to be held at the Stadium Hall, Wombwell, on Monday evening.

This will be the second successive election in which three candidates have contested the Dearne Valley. Five years ago, Coun. Hargreaves stood as an Independent.

Coun. Hargreaves, who was recently re-elected as a member of Wombwell Urban Council, told the “South Yorkshire Times” that he was delighted to accept the Liberal Party nomination.

Criticism

He said” Mr. Edwin Wainwright, the present Member for Dearne Valley has been quoted as saying that he anticipated this as an Election involving [policies rather than personalities.  We have a great deal of respect for Mr. Wainwright, but he has aligned himself with the Labour Government and its policies and therefore he has to be prepared to accept criticism which comes to that Party. He must accept that in that respect personalities must enter into the battle.”

Tuesday’s meeting was presided over by Chairman, Mr. W. A. Kay.
