A familiar figure in the village is Mark Marples, who celebrates his 77th birthday soon. Mr Marples can usually be found sitting on the large stone at the end of School Street, from which point of vantage he wishes all and sundry a cheery good-day.
Born at Apperknowle in Derbyshire he started work at the age of nine and for a 12-hours’ shift received 11d. (4.6 ‘new’ pence !)
