Charlie Allen – Promising Footballer

February 1927

Mexborough and Swinton Times February 11, 1927

This is a photograph of another promising outside left: – Charlie Allen of Darfield.

Nobody would suggest, of course, the Allen is in Tunny’s (Fred Tunstall) Street but when all is said and done he is not too many blocks away. I should not be surprised to see and bring a little windfall into the coffers of the Low Valley club one of these days.

Allen came into the limelight of local Junior football in rather remarkable circumstances. He joined Darfield Bridge three seasons ago, but at that point he had never kicked a ball except in a backyard, and the “Briganda” took him on trust.

He soon proved himself a born winger and was quickly recognised as one of the best men in the Bridge between. During his first season in football he helped Darfield Bridge to win the Montagu Cup and the Barnsley junior league championship.

This season he joined Darfield and has shown the same consistency of good form. Allen has had trials with Preston North End and Coventry, but never had the luck to reproduce his best form in the higher rank. Allen is 23, stands 5’10” and weighs about 11 ½ stones.
