Darfield Sailor
Might Have Been a Footballer

But for the fact that Darfield born Peter Drury, son of Mr and Mrs Richard Drury, 49 Illsley Road and a strong desire to go to sea, even might now have been a professional footballer.

As it is, he enjoys football and with his Naval unit in Malta, and has competed with them against Italian Naval footballers, against the French, against an Air Force team and against a Maltese team.

Peter Drury attended Foulstone Modern School and played football with them. He also played at centre forward with Houghton Main when he worked there. He had a trial with Wolves juniors and scouts from Tottenham also “spotted” him.

He had a strong desire, however from boyhood, to join the Navy and three years ago he signed for 12 years. He is a signaller and for the last 18 months has been stationed off Malta.

His work has taken him and members of his squadron to work in the clearing of the Service Canal.
