Mexborough Headmaster’s Preferment

Appointed to New School at Darfield

A popular Mexborough Headmaster, Mr. A. R. Martin, who has been Headmaster at Adwick Road Senior School for the past 13 years has been the recipient of many congratulations on the news of his appointment as Headmaster of the new Modern School now in course of erection at Darfield to accommodate some 480 pupils. The school is expected to be opened next Easter and it is stated will be one of the finest in Yorkshire.

After leaving college Mr. Martin was appointed as Assistant teacher at Barnoldswick, where he remained for three years prior to his first Headship at Greivelthorpe School near Ripon.

In 1919 he was appointed Headmaster at the Kilnhurst Council School where he remained until he was appointed to Adwick Road School in 1926.

For many years Mr. Martin has taken a practical and prominent interest in many phases of the public life of Mex-borough. He has done very valuable work as a member of the Mexborough Montagu Hospital Board, of which Institute he has for 15 years now been both a Trustee and a Life Governor.

He first became connected with the Hospital when he resided at Kilnhurst and represented that area as a member of the Board. He has been secretary of the House Committee for the past 14 years. and in recent years has been a Vice-Chairman of the Board

A glutton for work and a magnificent organiser, the true value of the work which Mr. Martin has done for the Mexborough Hospital, cannot be estimated, and his removal to Darfield will entail a severe loss to the personnel of the Board

Mr. Martin was appointed Headmaster of the Mexborough Fvening Institute same 12 years ago and under his guidance the Institute has rapidly progressed and is now acknowledged as one of the very best in the district.

His keen interest in literature too brought him in connection with the Mexborough Library Committee, and during his 12 years as member of that Committee  he has been Chairman four times.

In co-operation with the late Doctor Lee, Mr Martin was largely responsible for the formation of the Mexborough Fresh Air and Convalescent Fund, which sends about 80 poor children to the seaside each year, in addition to sending children who are in a poor state of health to the Scarborough Convalescent Home for children.

Mr. Martin was the first secretary for the Fund and held that position for about six years, and he is now a Vice President

He is a past president of the Mexborough Teachers’ Association with which he has had a very long association and a past president also of the Mexborough Teachers Association with which he has had a very long association and a past president also of the Mexborough and District Schools Sports Association.

In every respect Mr Martin has been deeply interested in Mexborough, and his loss will be a real one and a great gain to the community of Darfield where he intends to remove when he takes over his new duties in the Spring of next year.
