University Scholarship for Darfield Youth

Mr Arthur Venables, of 19, 90 mile Road, Darfield has gained a scholarship under the miners welfare fund scheme, tenable at Victoria University, Manchester, and will use it for the purpose of obtaining an honours degree in economics.

Mr Venables is 22 years of age, and has worked in the pit since he was 13.

He has taken every available opportunity of continuing his studies. He attended the Darfield evening schools, under Mr JW Hall and afterwards the Barnsley Technical School.

Eventually became linked up with the Workers Educational Association, and serve the Darfield brand for three years as secretary.

He has also been awarded a scholarship for Tutorial Class students by the West Riding County Council.

He attends the Wesleyan Church at Darfield and is also a keen tennis player.
