50 Chosen for Area Final at Mexborough
The South Yorkshire Times” Series competition to find a candidate for Miss Yorkshire closed this week, and we are able to-day to announce the names of the contestants who have been chosen by a panel of judges to appear in the local final. Next Wednesday evening the 50 candidates will appear in the Empress Ballroom, Mexborough, before an entirely new panel, and from them will be chosen a candidate to go forward to Bridlington on August 23rd to compete for the Festival Queen title.
£20 in Prizes
Wednesday’s winner will receive £10 from this Series of newspapers, Second and third choices, who will be regarded as deputies !o the local winner, will each receive respectively £6 and £4. The girl chosen as “Miss Yorkshire” at Bridlington will receive £50 and a cup. There will be second and third prizes of £25 an £15, and all unplaced finalists will each receive £5.
From Every Corner
“Miss South Yorkshire” has proved an astonishing success. Since our first announcement in May, entries have continued to pour in by every post from every corner of our wide circulation area, and if any measure of the response were needed it may be gauged by one fact alone.
When the competition was announced it was stated that 12 contestants would be chosen for the local final. The judges given the task of selecting them from the tremendous entry found it absolutely Impossible to narrow them down to that figure and, at the same time, to give a fair opportunity to so many “possibles.” They decided, therefore to extend the local final to 50.
They were guided, of course, entirely by the photographs submitted. The majority of them were head and shoulder portraits and only small proportion of the many contestants submitted full-length: photographs. They report a very high standard and promise a considerable – though an entirely delightful “headache” for Wednesday’s judges in the Empress Ballroom.
It was decided after considerable thought not to admit the general public to Wednesday’s session. Each finalist has been advised by post and an invitation is extended to each to bring along to friends or relatives. It is felt that by this means absolute fairness will be extended to every candidate. A report of the final will appear next week’s editions of the “South Yorkshire Times” Series, supplemented by photographs taken on that evening
Yet Another Indication
to everyone who has helped to make this competition such an outstanding success the proprietors of the “South Yorkshire Times” Series extend grateful thanks. It’s presented popularity yet another indication of the many homes into which are several editions go each week. She is particularly interested to note the widely scattered areas from which Wednesday’s finalists have been drawn, and particularly so remember that when the first panel of judges made their decisions they were unaware until after their choice have been made, exactly where each competitor so chosen came from.
