Round the Yorkshire Council Fields

Baxter’s 83 Fails To Save Cortonwood

Although a cleverly scored 83 by captain Clive Baxter brought about something of a “face-saver”, Cortonwood’s recovery was not good enough to beat Yorkshire Council visitors Shiregreen who won by six wickets.

Cortonwood were all out for 142 in 35 overs, and Shiregreen replied with 145 for four, thanks mainly to a fine partnership between H. Finnegan (65) and P. Flaherty (19).

Cortonwood’s position looked pretty dismal when opener Brian Hunsley was out for none, and vice-captain Cyril Taylor (1) and Henry Walters (4) soon followed. John Walters was out for 24 with the score at 35, and with the score at 66 for six it was left to Clive Baxter and Barry Meadows to get cracking. Their partnership of 54 took the score to 120, Barry Meadows scoring 21. Clive Baxter hit three sixes and nine fours and was the last man out.

Wickets fell to R. Heath (three for 26), Myers (three for 51), F. Harrison (two for 19) and R. Miles (two for 22). Shiregreen had one man back in the pavilion with the score at 18.  G. Burdett having been bowled by Philip Wrightson for 14, when Finnegan and Flaherty got together. Cortonwood’s Henry Wildsmith took three wickets for 40 and Philip Wrightson one for 18.  Cortonwood’s inability to get more runs could not blamed onto the wicket which was in perfect condition.

Easy For Mexborough

Mexborough Athletic beat Rotherham Town by six wickets at Mexborough on Saturday in the Yorkshire Council. Scores were Mexborough Athletic (75 for 6), Rotherham Town (74). Principal individual scores for Mexborough were F. Bottom (20), J. Nicholson (25) and P. Jenkinson (13 not out) and for Rotherham Town E. Roberts (32). Best bowling performances for Mexborough Athletic were by B. Hardeman (4-28), J. Fretwell (3-23) and A. Diggles (2-18).

Bad Light Ends Match

Mexborough Athletic drew with Worsborough at Worsborough on Sunday in the Yorkshire Council. Scores were Worsborough 192-9, Mexborough Ath. 86-3.

Principal individual scores for Mexborough were C. Gouldin (31), A. Sage (22 not out), K. Cromack (15), B. Hardeman (10 not out). Best bowling performances for Mexborough were by B. Hardeman (3 for 44) and J. Sellers (3 for 35). This game ended in a draw when the match was poised in such a position that it could have been won by either side.  Bad light brought the players off with 17 overs still to play.

Darfield Bowlers Win Day

With a target of 120 to aim at, Maltby were in sight of a Yorkshire Council victory at Darfield, but the Darfield attack turned on the pressure and dismissed the last three batsmen for no runs and the whole side for 114.  Man of the match was Dennis Batty, who claimed seven Maltby wickets for 37 runs.

Darfield were in a bad way in the early stage of the game, having lost four wickets for only 16 runs. Opener Ian Randerson was out for a single, and Ken Kitching and Peter Ramsey both failed to score. Schoolboy Michael Savage, opening with Randerson, scored nine.  It was left to Arthur Gibbs and Les Stocks, 31 each, to give the “kiss of life” but after that Darfield’s hopes received a temporary setback when a Maltby player claimed a hat-trick.
